The Scientist: A Documentary About Dr. Raphael Mechoulam

The Israeli chemist who isolated CBD in 1963 and THC in 1964 — and spent the next six decades proving the world wasn't ready for what he'd found.

Why This Documentary Belongs on a CBD Science Blog

Dr. Raphael Mechoulam was 33 years old when he walked into a Tel Aviv police station and asked to borrow five kilograms of Lebanese hashish for a chemistry experiment. The police said yes. What followed over the next six decades — the isolation of CBD in 1963, the isolation and synthesis of THC in 1964, the discovery of the endocannabinoid system in the 1990s, and the identification of anandamide, the body's own cannabis-like molecule — constitutes the entire scientific foundation on which every CBD product ever made rests.

Without Mechoulam, there is no cannabinoid science. Without cannabinoid science, there is no rational basis for anything Foothills CBD does — the extraction decisions, the full-spectrum formulations, the terpene preservation, the COA transparency. We feature this documentary not as content marketing but as intellectual honesty: here is the man whose work makes ours possible, and here is the story of how he did it.

"The endocannabinoid system is involved in essentially all human disease. We have just scratched the surface."

— Dr. Raphael Mechoulam, Hebrew University of Jerusalem

What the Documentary Covers

Produced by Fundacion CANNA — the Spanish cannabis research foundation — The Scientist follows Mechoulam from his early work in Israel through his collaborations with the U.S. National Institutes of Health, his discovery that the brain produces its own cannabinoid-like compounds, and his final years advocating for clinical research that the pharmaceutical industry and regulatory bodies spent decades resisting. The film is neither advocacy nor polemic. It is a portrait of a scientist doing science in a field the world wasn't ready to take seriously.

For anyone using CBD therapeutically — or anyone trying to understand why extraction method, terpene preservation, and full-spectrum formulation matter — this is the foundational context. The entourage effect, the endocannabinoid system, the receptor pharmacology we document in our bioavailability article: all of it traces back to the work documented here.

Dr. Raphael Mechoulam passed away on March 9, 2023, at the age of 92. His legacy lives in every peer-reviewed study cited on this blog, every COA we publish, and every extraction decision we make. Watch the film.

Every product we make is built on this science. Every batch is documented.
